Day One of Teacher Training Workshop

Today was Day One of the Teacher Training Workshop for my Jazz Dance Technique & Syllabus (by the way, Genevieve gets the Frequent Flyer Mile Award for coming all the way from South Africa). It was a good day and I came away thinking about my prior blog: Embracing Beginner’s Mind.

There is something so vital and special about teachers who are willing to continue to expand their understanding. Each of them, by virtue of attending a workshop such as this, demonstrate the idea of beginner’s mind. In working with the teachers today, in hearing their stories and in witnessing their passion for teaching, I learned new ideas and found myself, in turn, inspired. So, I thank you all and hope the rest of the days bring continued growth, sharing and learning.

Day Two of Teacher Training Workshop

Day Two of the Teacher Training Workshop was even better than Day One . While being much more sore than I was after the first day, I am also much more inspired and excited about working and sharing with these teaching-artists. We are an extremely varied group and that makes for such a dynamic and interesting mix. Tomorrow is our last day and I am looking forward to it but know I will miss the discussions, laughter and camaraderie when it is over.

Singularity Project Jan 14 2013

For our first rehearsal on this new project—Singularity—I started off by sitting down with a group of dancers from Webster University to discuss the concepts for the piece and the processes I intend to use for this exploration. Singularity—as I am using it—has two meanings. Principles/Hypothesis/Intention First, singularity is used to mean an once-in-a-lifetime occurrence. In this sense, it is the idea of any performance being unique and unrepeatable. Drawing from theories of relativity, I want to explore this concept where the audience members actually impact the unfolding of the dance—like Schrodinger’s Cat . My intention is to explore, through the use of interactive digital media, the audience’s participation and impact upon a live performance. I Forgot To Inhibit

Warning: nerdy dancer jargon incoming. Today I subbed ballet classes for Maddie D. and I introduced the upper level students to the concept from Luc and Rebecca’s book (and workshop) about using the double spiral in pirouettes. In a nutshell, in the preparation for a pirouette en dehors from fourth position to the right, the diagonal through the torso from the left arm in a la seconde to the right hip are in a secondary spiral. Before turning, you collapse the spiral toward primary. The body coils like a spring and then releases into the pirouette. This is a really remarkable thing to feel and see when done right. For many of my students the results were immediate and exciting--floating, effortless, well-placed pirouettes where there used to be struggle and strain. However, it did not work for all of them.
